Pictionary Word Generator
Press one button and our free Pictionary word generator draws a random word for the next person to draw. There’s nothing to download and nothing to print unless you want to. Choose who’s playing, pick your categories, set a timer if you like, and start the round. Every draw pulls from hundreds of hand-picked words and phrases, and the generator won’t repeat a word until the whole bag has been used, so each turn stays fresh. Want to play on paper instead? You can print the word list or download a ready-to-cut deck of printable Pictionary cards in one tap.
How to use the generator
Using the generator takes seconds:
- Pick who’s playing. Choose Kids, Family, or Adults to set a sensible starting level. Kids gets simple single words, Family mixes every level, and Adults adds harder words plus phrases and sayings.
- Fine-tune the difficulty. Switch between Easy, Medium, Hard, or All levels at any time.
- Choose your categories. Turn topics on or off — animals, food, objects, actions, places, jobs, sports, feelings, phrases, movies and stories. The card shows which category each word belongs to.
- Tap the card or the draw button. A random word flips into view for the drawer to see.
- Set a timer (optional). Pick 30, 60, or 90 seconds per turn and the countdown runs automatically.
- Keep score. Add your teams or players and tap +1 for every correct guess. A crown marks the leader.
Because it’s a random word generator, no two games play out the same way. Refresh the round whenever you want a brand-new mix.
How to play Pictionary
If you’re new to the game, the rules are simple:
- Split everyone into two or more teams.
- One player from a team uses the generator to get a secret word — no showing the other players.
- Start the timer. The drawer draws the word using pictures only: no letters, numbers, words, or gestures.
- Their team shouts out guesses before time runs out. A correct guess earns a point.
- Rotate the drawer so everyone gets a turn. The first team to a set score wins.

A word generator for kids, families, and adults
The same generator works for every age group because you control the level. For younger children, choose Kids or Easy to keep words to simple, drawable objects like dog, cake, or ball. For a mixed group, Family pulls a balanced spread so everyone has a fair turn. For grown-up game nights, Adults and Hard bring in trickier words and full phrases that make rounds more competitive.
Pictionary topic generator: choose your categories
Think of the categories as a built-in Pictionary topic generator. Leave them all on for variety, or narrow the game to a theme — only animals, only movies and stories, only sports, and so on. Themed rounds are a great way to tailor difficulty to your players or to match a party theme.
Pictionary phrase generator
Switch on the Phrases & Sayings category and the tool doubles as a Pictionary phrase generator. Instead of single words, the drawer gets a short phrase or common saying — things like “raining cats and dogs,” “couch potato,” or “walk the dog.” Phrases are tougher to draw and a favorite for older kids and adults who want more of a challenge.
Print your own Pictionary cards and word list
Prefer to play away from a screen? You have two free printables built right in.
Open the printable word list to see every word in your selected categories, grouped and labeled by difficulty. You can print it as a reference sheet or copy it onto your own cards. It works as a ready-made Pictionary word list generator — pick your categories and level first, then print only the words you want.
Or tap “Download printable cards” to create a printable Pictionary card deck as a PDF. You choose whether to print the words you’ve selected or the full set, and whether to fit 6 larger cards or 9 compact cards per page. Each card shows the word, its category, and a difficulty marker, with dashed lines so they’re easy to cut out. The cards print in clean black and white, so they work on any printer with no colored ink. It’s a free Pictionary card generator and word list in one — great for classrooms, road trips, and party tables.
Tips for a great game
Mix easy and hard words so every player gets a fair turn. Use a shorter timer to keep energy high, or turn the timer off for relaxed family play. For big groups, split into more teams and play to a higher score. And if a word is too tricky, let the drawer pass and draw a new one.
Whether you need a quick pictionary generator for a classroom, a rainy-day activity at home, or a party game night, this tool has a level and a category for everyone. Bookmark the page, grab a whiteboard or some paper, and start drawing!

Frequently asked questions
Is this Pictionary word generator free?
Yes. The generator is completely free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to download. You can draw unlimited random words and print the word list and cards as often as you like.
How does the random word generator work?
Each time you tap the card or the draw button, the tool picks a random word from the categories and difficulty level you’ve chosen. It won’t repeat a word until every word in your selection has been drawn, so each round feels fresh.
Can I use it for kids?
Yes. Choose the Kids setting or the Easy level and the generator sticks to simple, easy-to-draw words like dog, cake, and ball, with no tricky phrases. It’s great for classrooms, family game nights, and parties.
Does it generate phrases as well as single words?
It does. Turn on the Phrases & Sayings category to use it as a phrase generator. The drawer gets short phrases and common sayings instead of single words, which makes the game harder and more fun for older players.
Can I choose specific topics or categories?
Yes. You can switch any of the ten categories on or off — animals, food, objects, actions, places, jobs, sports, feelings, phrases, and movies and stories — so the generator only draws from the topics you want.
Can I print Pictionary cards?
Yes. Tap “Download printable cards” to create a free printable Pictionary card deck as a PDF. Choose the words you’ve selected or the full set, pick 6 or 9 cards per page, and print. Each card shows the word, its category, and a difficulty marker, with dashed cut lines, and it all prints in black and white.
Can I print the Pictionary word list?
Yes. Open the printable word list inside the generator to see every word in your selected categories, sorted by difficulty. You can print it for a screen-free game or write the words onto cards.
How many players do you need for Pictionary?
You need at least two teams, but the game works with any number of players. Add as many teams or players as you like to the scoreboard, and the generator keeps everyone’s points in one place.
How do you play Pictionary?
Split into teams, have one player secretly view a word from the generator and draw it using pictures only — no letters, numbers, words, or gestures — while their team guesses before the timer ends. A correct guess scores a point, and the drawer rotates each round.
